Preparation

How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Carpet Cleaning

A quick, practical checklist that helps your cleaning go faster, produce better results, and avoid surprises on the day of the appointment.

Before the appointment

Vacuum lightly

A quick vacuum the day before helps pull up loose hair, crumbs and grit so the professional cleaning can focus on deeper soil. It doesn't need to be a deep vacuuming session — one pass over the areas being cleaned is plenty.

Pick up toys and personal belongings

Clear small items off the carpet: shoes, toys, laundry, pet beds, throw rugs, plants, cords and decorative items. This keeps the cleaner from having to work around them and speeds the job up.

Move fragile and valuable items

Small valuables, breakables, framed items on low tables and anything sentimental are best moved out of the rooms being cleaned. That includes items on top of low furniture that might get bumped during moving.

Move small furniture

Small chairs, side tables, ottomans, kids' furniture and light stools are easy to move aside. Larger and heavier items — sofas, beds, dressers, bookcases — are usually worked around or moved as part of the appointment, depending on what was discussed when you booked.

Identify stains and problem areas

Make a mental (or written) note of specific stains, high-traffic lanes, and any pet accidents — even old ones. Sharing these ahead of time helps with pre-treatment. Learn more about why disclosing pet accidents matters in our pet urine odor guide.

Discussing furniture movement

Ask when scheduling what's included with your appointment: whether small or medium furniture is moved, whether foam blocks and foil tabs are used, and what should stay in place. Beds, dressers, entertainment centers and heavy items usually stay put and the cleaner works around them.

Securing pets and kids

Cleaning equipment is loud and doors will be opening and closing while hoses run. Set up a quiet room for pets away from the work area, and keep kids clear of hoses and equipment. This is safer and also lets the cleaner work faster.

Access and equipment parking

The cleaner needs a clear path from their vehicle to the areas being cleaned. Truck-mount equipment runs from the vehicle through the door, so parking close to the entrance helps. A cleared front walkway and unlocked exterior door at the scheduled time makes for a smooth start.

If you can't be home, arrange access ahead of time — a lockbox, a neighbor or a property manager. Let us know how to reach you with any questions.

The day of cleaning

  • Turn off any air fresheners or plug-ins so we can smell what we're working with.
  • Walk the cleaner through the rooms and point out stains and pet accident spots.
  • Confirm which pieces of furniture should be moved and which should stay.
  • Keep pets in a secured room and let us know where they are.

What to expect after cleaning

Carpet will feel damp when we leave and take a few hours to fully dry. Airflow — ceiling fans, HVAC set to "on," open interior doors — helps a lot. Our drying-time guide goes deeper on what to expect and how to speed things up.

Wait until the carpet is fully dry before putting furniture back on it, especially heavy or metal-footed items. Walking on damp carpet in clean socks is fine; bare feet or shoes can introduce oils and new soil.
