Coffee & Red Wine Stains on Carpet
Two of the most common — and most panic-inducing — carpet spills. Here's what to do in the first five minutes, what to avoid, and when to call a professional.
First Five Minutes
- Blot, don't scrub. Use a clean white towel and press straight down.
- Cold water only. Heat sets tannin stains from coffee, tea and wine.
- Work from the outside in so the stain doesn't spread.
- Keep blotting until the towel comes up almost clean.
- Cover with a dry towel and weight to draw remaining moisture up as it dries.
What to Avoid
- Hot water, steam or a hair dryer — they set the color.
- Dish soap, laundry detergent, or bleach — residue that attracts new soil, or permanent fiber damage.
- Scrubbing with a brush — distorts fibers permanently.
- "Miracle" spray products applied without spot-testing a hidden area first.
Why These Stains Are Hard
Coffee, tea and red wine contain tannins — plant-based compounds that bond quickly with carpet fibers, especially nylon. The longer they sit, the more the color migrates through the fiber. Cream, sugar, and any spilled food add protein and sugar residues that need separate treatment.
Professional Treatment

Can red wine stains be fully removed?
Fresh red wine, addressed within minutes, usually comes out completely with cold water blotting followed by professional treatment. Stains that have been walked on for days may leave a faint pink shadow even after treatment.
Will club soda or salt actually work on wine?
They can help dilute and lift a fresh spill so the color doesn't set — that's a real effect. They won't remove a dried stain, and salt left in the fibers has to be extracted.
What about coffee with cream and sugar?
Cream and sugar make the stain more complex — you're dealing with tannin, dairy protein and sugar residue. Enzyme pre-treatment plus hot water extraction handles all three; DIY often addresses only the color.
